WANT TO START SOMETHING NEW? BE SURE TO CHECK TODAY'S CHOGADHIYA!

Have you heard people saying that this time is auspicious and that time isn’t? I am sure most of us have heard this but did you ever wonder how people know about these auspicious times, there has to be some kind of calendar. Well, there is, it’s called the Choghadiya.

Choghadiya is the Vedic Hindu Calendar which tells us about the Dina, Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana of each day, which is different for every city because it’s calculated on the basis of the sunrise and sunset timings.

If we see the term Choghadiya, it’s actually made of two words – Cho which means 4 and Ghadiya which is from the Ghadi which means Clock, so it roughly translates to 4 Clocks which means a total of 96 minutes. So most of the Choghadiya is around 96 minutes.

It is believed that when prayers are done at a particular time (Muhrat) they give the most benefits in terms of wealth, health and fortune. This mural can be determined from the Choghadiya Panchang.

How can we calculate Choghadiya? It’s actually quite simple; you divide the day into two parts – Daytime which is the period from the sunrise to sunset and Nighttime which is the period from sunset to sunrise of the next day.

Each period consists of eight Choghadiyas which can be calculated by dividing the difference between sunrise and sunset or sunset and sunrise by 8. For example, the timings of sunrise and sunset on day 1 are 6:00 AM and 6:01 PM respectively and the timing of sunrise on day 2 is 6:00 AM.

So the daytime period is 721 minutes and the nighttime period is 719 minutes. So each daytime Choghadiya will last for 721/8 = 90.125 minutes and each nighttime Choghadiya will last for 719/8 = 89.87 minutes.

On each weekday the first Muhurtha is governed by the lord of the weekday. The first Choghadiya Muhurtha, for example, is dominated by the Sun on Sunday followed by Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars respectively.

The daytime's last Muhurtha is also ruled by the day lord. Thus, the result of each separation, either negative or positive, is determined by the ruling planet's existence. In Vedic Astrology, the span of time under the influence of Venus, Mercury, Moon, and Jupiter is generally considered auspicious whereas the period of time under the influence of Earth, Mars, and Saturn are typically considered inauspicious. We may mark any Choghadiya Muhurtha as bad or good, based on the above details.

This should be remembered that poor Choghadiya can also be ideal depending on the required job that needs to be completed.

In total there are 7 types of Choghadiyas:

  • Amrit: this Choghadiya is under the influence of planet moon which is considered a holy plant in Hindu astrology. Hence this time is considered to be the most auspicious time in the Choghadiya Panchang. This time is suitable for doing any work or for celebrating any occasion.
  • Shubh: this is the time under the influence of the planet Jupiter which is also a holy planet according to Hindu astrology. Hence it is a Shubh Muhrat and is very auspicious for celebrating occasions or taking important decisions like fixing marriage dates.
  • Labh: this is the time of the day under the influence of Mercury which is again a holy and auspicious planet and is considered lucky as per Hindu astrology. It is the best time to start something new, if you wish to learn something new or take up a new career, then Labh Muhrat is the best time to do so.
  • Char: char is the time under the influence of Venus which is considered to be a holy and auspicious planet. So the time in this is quite propitious, it is the best time to travel as the planet Venus is said to be the planet of movement.
  • Udveg: this time is said to be under the influence of Sun which isn’t a beneficial planet, so it has adverse effects on people. This isn’t a good time to start something new or celebrate any occasion; however, it can prove to be favorable for government work.
  • Kaal: this is the time under the influence of Saturn and is considered inauspicious because Saturn is a malefic planet as per Hindu Astrology. No work should be undertaken during this time as this is not a favorable time, however, some work will lead to wealth creation, you can do that.
  • Rog: Rog Choghadiya is connected to Mars. Mars isn't considered a favorable planet, according to Hindu Vedic Astrology. This world has destructive powers, and under its power, no auspicious research is performed during the period. Rog Choghadiya is always advised at the time of battle when he is under the control of Mars, even whether one wishes to kill their opponent.
