Significance and Importance of Vishwakarma Puja 2020

 

 

THE DATE

 

The Vishwakarma Puja is observed mostly in between 16th September to 19th September of the Hindu calendar. It is the last month of the Bhado month as per the Solar calendar, observed in places like Bengal, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and other states. The festival is also observed in Nepal.

 

The date of the Vishwakarma Puja coincides with that of Kanya Sankranti as per the Hindu calendar. Hence, this year it falls on the 16th of September 2020.

 

It also coincides with the last day of the Bengali Bhadra month.

 

Vishwakarma Puja is also celebrated along with Annakut Festival on the day of Govardhan Puja. This marks another significant date of the Puja to be on the 15th of November, 2020.

 

In some places like Gujarat and Rajasthan and other states, Vishwakarma Puja is observed as Vishwakarma Jayanti on the Trayodashi in February, also known as the Vishwakarma Trayodashi or Vishwakarma Teras. 

 

 

OBSERVATION

 

Vishwakarma Puja is observed at places of labor, offices, factories and other places as schools and hospitals, and shops and sometimes open grounds. All sorts of work agendas, like engineers, factory workers, mechanics, welders, smiths, craftsmen, artisans. 

 

The Vishwakarma Puja worship is for the praying of better labor conditions and the goodness and welfare of workers all around the world. It is marked for the smooth functioning of all the machinery and the financial department. It is the overall worship for the prosperity of workers and that there is not any particular obstacles in their lives. Their lives are those of deliverance and hence work is the ultimate emancipation for them. 

 

 

THE LEGEND

 

Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated in the honor of Vishwakarma. He is the Hindu God who is considered the Supreme architect, he constructed the Earth in six days and the seventh day the humans trampled on the planet. He is considered to construct the royal city of Dwarka which is the residence of Krishna. He built the royal Maya Sabha of Pandavas and also the fabulous weapons of the Gods. 

 

He is considered as the divine carpenter and has been mentioned in the Rig Veda. He authored the Sthapatya Veda, which deals with the sciences of mechanics and architecture. He also created Lor Indra's Vajra.

 

 

THE WORSHIP

 

On the auspicious day of Vishwakarma Puja, workers worship the deity of Vishwakarma as well as his Vahan, the elephant. Workers also pay obeisance to their tools on this day and shops and factories usually remain closed on account of observation of a form of Labour Day. On the day of Vishwakarma Puja, the idol of the divine architect is placed in decorated marquees or on raised platforms in shops and factory floors, where the puja rituals and other ablutions take place. Family members of the workers to participate in the festivities, gaining the favor of the divinity on behalf of the workers in their families. The worship is followed by a community gourmet for the workers and their family members. Usually, all people are welcome to attend the Puja.
