What is Rahu Mahadasha?

‘Rahu’ is the most mysterious planet of all. By nature, it is a malefic (evil) planet. ‘Ketu’ and ‘Rahu’ in Hindu Astrology are the point of intersection between the path of the moon along with the apparent path of the Sun in the sky.

The story of Rahu unfolds, as the Hindu mythology narrates when the nectar of immortality (Amrit) came out there was a fight between the gods and the demons as to who gets to taste the nectar and become immortal. Lord Vishu took the stand of protecting humankind by stopping the demons from becoming immortal. He then incarnated himself into a beautiful woman ‘Mohini’ to bewitch the demons and lure them into tasting poison instead of the Amrit. Under the dominance of Mohini the demons got fooled and swallowed the poison, however, there was one exception, a demon named Swarbhanu who saved himself from getting lured. He was the only one to look through the bait and intelligently he transformed himself into a god and tasted a drop of Amrit. When Lord Vishnu was brought to notice this, he promptly used his weapon ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ to behead the demon. The demon had already tasted the nectar and thus turned immortal. However, the body of the demon was cut into two by Lord Vishnu’s ‘Sudarshan Chakra’. The separated head of Swarbhanu demon became ‘Rahu’ and the headless torso became known as ‘Ketu’. Now ‘Ketu’ and ‘Rahu’ became a part of the solar system eventually and were given the status of the planets. Therefore, Rahu is believed to be a non-existent planet which is one of the nine major astronomical bodies. Rahu, when personified, is related to desire, the primordial rebel and breaker of the rules, cunning and daring. Even though Rahu is generally termed as bad or evil and feared by most, the richest and highly prosperous people in the world have a Rahu and Saturn. However, even though feared to be the most destructive planet of all, Rahu often is considered to be skillful and successful. The planet of illusions, Rahu, brings in great desire to go for more and more materialistic life comforts unless a strong positive influence of Satvik sign nullifies such desires.

Rahu, whenever it is aligned with a particular during the period of Mahadasha, extracts all the energy and leaves it dull and lifeless. The planetary positions will defy the real effects of this Dasha.
