Akshaya Tritiya or commonly known as Akha Teej has a lot of importance in the Hindu and Jain culture. It is said to be celebrated in the month of Vaishak as per the Hindu calendar. It falls on the third day of the Shukla Paksha.

 

In the Gregorian calendar, Akshaya Tritiya falls somewhere around the months of April and May. On this day it is believed that the Sun and Moon are at their best positions. Astrologically it is considered to be a very holy phenomenon.

 

Hindu folklore suggests that a lot of significant incidents took place on this day like it is believed that the writing of Mahabharata began on this day by Lord Ganesha and Ved Vyasa. This is the day also marks the birth of Lord Parashurama who is considered the sixth incarnation of Lord Shiva.

 

It is also the day Maa Annapurna, the goddess of food was born. You must have heard of the famous story of Sudama and Krishna, well it is on the day of Akshaya Tritiya that Lord Krishna helped out Sudama by providing him the wealth. Krishna solved the troubles of Sudama.

 

This day also witnesses an important event in the Mahabharata; Lord Krishna gave the Pandavas the “Akshaya Patra” when they were on an exile. He also provided them with a bowl that would keep on producing food and the Pandavas would never be hungry.

 

River Ganga is said to descend on Earth on this day. It was on the day of Akshaya Tritiya that Kuber was given the post of Treasurer of gods by Goddess Lakshmi after he impressed her with his dedication and faith.

 

In the Jain culture, this marks the day of celebration of the remembrance of their first god, Lord Adinatha. This clearly suggests how important this day is for both the Hindu and Jain cultures.

Akshaya Tritiya marks the end of a yearlong Tapasya of the Jains. They end it by in-take sugarcane juice. Worshippers believe that reciting mantras, meditating and performing activities that engage them spiritually ensures that they have a good fortune in the future.

 

Followers of Lord Krishna apply sandalwood paste on the idol. The belief behind this ritual is that this pleases the lord and the worshipper will definitely get to go to heaven after death. There are a host of benefits of performing Akshaya Tritiya puja like a stable life.
